Information About Peas...

The pea plant, which gives the delicious and very nutritious vegetable called Peas in spring and summer, is from Legumes. The pea plant, whose homeland is unknown, has been cultivated in Eurasia since ancient times. Today, as in many parts of the world, it is also grown in abundance in Turkey.

There are many varieties of this annual herbaceous plant called garden pea (P. sativum): Some of them are dwarf and grow up to 30-40 cm. it grows and spreads to the ground with its green leaves and covers the ground. The other variety, called pole pea, is a climbing plant that clings to whatever it finds high with the leeches it removes from its stem. These need to be supported with enthusiasm. Only the grains of some of the pea varieties are eaten. However, some peas do not have a hard layer called parchment in their body.

This variety of peas, called sultani peas, is eaten with their shells. Another important variety is the araka pea, which has large grains. Peas are loved fresh and eaten in a wide variety of dishes, as well as being dried, frozen, canned and stored for future consumption. Flour made from dried peas is used in the preparation of delicious pea soup and some dishes. There are also varieties of fodder peas grown solely for use as animal feed.

The nutritional values of raw (uncooked) fresh peas can be listed as follows: 84 calories; 6.3 gr. protein; 14.4 gr. carbohydrate; 0 cholesterol; 0.4 gr. oil; 2 gr. fiber; 116 mg. phosphorus; 26mg. calcium; 1.9 mg. iron: 2 mg. sodium; 316 mg. potassium; 35 mg. magnesium; 640 IU of vitamin A; 0.35mg. vitamin B1; 0.14 mg. vitamin B2; 2.9 mg. Vitamin B3: 0.16 mg. vitamin B6; 35.5mcgr. folic acid; 27 mg. Vitamin C and 2.1 mg. Vitamin E.

The pea plant is propagated by its seeds (dried grains). These seeds are sown directly in the garden or field where pea cultivation will take place. The peas that will be harvested in the spring are planted in October-November-December, and those that will be harvested in the summer are planted in the spring. Pea seeds should never be planted in cold and wet soil, and care should be taken that pea cultivation has not been done in the same soil for two years. When sowing is done by hand, the seeds should be pressed tightly with fertilizer mortar.
