How are broad beans grown?
The cultivation of broad bean, which is a temperate climate plant, is mostly done in winter in Turkey and is consumed in its fresh form in spring. It is a favorite of farmers because of the nitrogen contribution of the small tubers formed on its roots to the soil. It is planted alternately with cereals or summer vegetables. It is cultivated as green manure by plowing before it blooms and as animal feed after harvest. The pods usually have compound leaves and white flowers on a long, hollow and angular stem. From these self-pollinating flowers, the fruits of the plant called pods or badiç are formed. Each pod contains 8-10 seeds, also called 'bean pods' or 'inside broad beans'.
