Botanical Information : It belongs to the family of wheatgrass. It is an annual herbaceous plant and can be between 1.5-3 meters in length depending on the region where it grows. The leaves are in the shape of a long thin spear, tapering towards the tip. The margins of the leaves are entire, wavy, with a grayish-white large main vein running from the center and a dozen left and right lateral veins parallel to it. The male and female flowers stand separately, but on the same plant. The female flowers are tassels emerging from the cob. Its fruit is called a corncob for short, and 100-200 corn seeds are lined up on this husband.
Cultivated Places: Corn, whose homeland is South America, was brought to Europe by sailors after the discovery of the Americas. From there, it is thought that this plant is called corn in our language, since it was brought to our country from the African mainland via Egypt. Turkey's climate is quite suitable for Egypt, so it is grown in a wide area.
Collection - Storage : Matured corn cobs are collected, dried and starch or oil is obtained from it. Corn tassels are collected in June or July, dried in the shade and stored in special closed containers.
Known Composition : The grains of the corn plant contain a high percentage of starch, unsaturated fatty acids, vitamin A and sterols. The ingredients of corn silk used as medicine are as follows: Sugars such as glucose and maltose, sterols, resin, potassium salts and essential oil.
Places of Use : The corn oil obtained from corn kernels, as a liquid vegetable cooking oil, is known to prevent atherosclerosis. In addition, due to its nutritive value, corn grains are also used in the feed industry for animals. Flour is obtained from its grains. Even today, its use is widespread.
